A Scottish Christmas Carol’ is a joyous, rumbustious, and distinctly Scottish retelling of a much-loved Christmas classic, featuring a glittering array of characters.

Families may not be able to visit the theatre together to see this show, but children, parents, and grandparents can all watch along together from wherever they are – even if the grandparents are in another country. What a great way to start getting into the festive spirit together!

This one-man show stars Euan McIver, best known locally as the popular pantomime dame from The Maltings in Berwick.

Euan has worked alongside many of the great names in Scottish theatre, including Stanley Baxter, and he’s no stranger to film and television work, both here and in the States. His Edinburgh Festival one-man show ‘Making Faces’ was shortlisted for The Scotsman Awards.

‘A Scottish Christmas Carol’ was written by Euan McIver and Matthew Rooke (who also composed the music).

Writer/Director Matthew Rooke’s career includes working at numerous leading theatre companies across the UK, including the Royal National Theatre.

He told us: “As soon as the true nature of Covid-19 became clear, it was obvious that conventional theatre performances would have to cease for a long time. However, as performers, we refused to accept the idea that this was the end of all live theatre – hence the idea of creating a live theatre show streaming nightly, and with matinées, in the week leading up to Christmas.

“This show provided us with a great opportunity to take ownership of much-loved story and deliver it using broad Scots – the sort of language that most people in Scotland use in their daily lives, but which seldom is centre stage.”

Jane Hogg, Live Borders Director of Commercial Services said: “The Covid pandemic has given us many challenges, but it has also provided us with opportunities to reach out to partners and work collaboratively to commission new work.

“This project, with the support of Creative Scotland, allows us to shine a light on the creative talent in the Borders. We have local people who can create, produce, and broadcast worldwide from a studio in Heart of Hawick: for me that’s my best Christmas present.”

‘A Scottish Christmas Carol’ runs from 19 to 24 December, with evening and afternoon performances. (The running time is just over an hour and ten minutes.)

Performances: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December - 11am and 7.30pm and Monday 21 to Thursday 24 December 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 and are on sale from 1 December at www.liveborders.org.uk.
